Hi! My name is Lily and I’m writing on behalf of my big brother, Edwin. If you’ve had the pleasure of knowing Edwin, you know he treats everyone like family. He’s a bright light of optimism to those who know him. Now we have the chance to treat Edwin like family and make sure he feels loved and supported during this difficult time.

On February 19th, 2023, just three days after his birthday, Edwin got a flat tire and pulled over to the side of the road. While he was waiting for help, a drunk driver carelessly veered off the road and struck him while outside the vehicle. He suffered serious injuries to his legs upon impact and was taken to the hospital where doctors observed that his left leg was completely severed. Thankfully he survived, but they had no choice but to amputate his left leg above the knee. They were able to save his right leg, but his leg was practically rebuilt and required intensive surgeries and rehabilitation. Some of those surgeries include a rod in his femur, screws in his tibia and fibula, pins in his right toe bones, and a skin graft on his right thigh.

Since the accident, Edwin has had multiple surgeries, including surgeries to correct his knee fractures. He’s also undergone extensive physical therapy to help him heal from the injuries. He has progressed so far in his recovery, but as you can imagine, there is still a long road ahead as he navigates this new way of life as an amputee and victim of drunk driving. Having lost his leg, he is currently unable to walk and has been using a wheelchair to get around. Edwin has suffered massively from this tragic accident: physically, emotionally, and financially. But he has continued to be positive and express gratitude for a second chance at life while being a light for many during his dark time.

Edwin is now ready to begin the journey of getting a prosthetic and to begin learning how to walk again. Many people have asked my family how they can help. After many prayers and reflection, we feel this is the quickest and easiest way to make the biggest impact in helping Edwin’s recovery.

There will be significant out-of-pocket expenses for getting a prosthetic leg. Health insurance only covers a portion of the cost and the cost of prosthetics is high, so this would be an amazing way to help. Your donation will go directly toward the cost of Edwin’s prosthetic leg and other related expenses so he can walk again and be able to get his life back. Edwin has led a very adventurous and active lifestyle, including being part of the music community, traveling, and exercising. Having this prosthetic leg will allow Edwin to get some sense of normalcy back in his life.
