"All who suffer are heroes and warriors. I will continue to fight for justice for the plaintiffs, doctors, researchers, supporting family and friends. This lawsuit was never about the money...it is seek justice and resources for continued care” -Lisa Doyle Torrey
Since that late 60's my mom has struggled with tick borne diseases. As is often the case, she wasn’t diagnosed and treated for many years until 2002 and is now living with chronic late stage illness. As a result of this she is completely disabled and no longer able to work. She lives on a non-invasive ventilator and oxygen and needs to use a wheelchair most of the time. Her medical care is expensive and like so many people with chronic illness she is deep in debt.
In spite of her illness, she is a fighter and cares deeply about the suffering of others. She is the lead plaintiff in the Lyme Disease Antitrust Lawsuit filed in the Texarkana, TX federal court. This lawsuit represents my mom and so many others who have not been able to get the resources they need to live with chronic Lyme disease. A settlement was reached with 8 insurance companies on behalf of those who were represented in the lawsuit. Eventually, she will receive something from the settlement but it will not even cover the level of debt that she has at this time. In addition, she has no way to pay for ongoing living expenses beyond food stamps and using a food shelf. The urgent need is for the next 3 months of medical care and housing.
If you are reading this and have ever gone through a chronic illness or known anyone with Lyme disease, you understand what she is facing. Any assistance however small will be so helpful to her at this crucial time. Thank you for opening your heart to help my mom, Lisa. When the settlement comes any remaining money will be donated to a Foundation that does Lyme research and that pays for treatment.
