William Bender has lived in Babylon Village all his life. He has served as a volunteer firefighter and paramedic for the Babylon Village Fire Department for more than 43 years. He worked as a professional Paramedic for 32 years, 3 in New York City EMS and 29 at Stony Brook University Hospital. He has worked to save other people his entire life. He is a devoted father of four, grandfather of two, with two teenage sons still living at home.
In late October, Bill went to the hospital with some swelling in his lower right leg. Two weeks later diagnosed with Diffuse Large B-Cell lymphoma, he started the fight of his life. This type of lymphoma is rare, aggressive form of cancer likely due to Bill’s exposure during 9/11.
The first round of six chemo treatments worked in the beginning, but ultimately failed.
But there is HOPE.
Bill has been accepted into a trial where he will receive Radiation, chemo, and then Car-T cell therapy. This trial requires that he be hospitalized for treatment, then live nearby in NYC for a minimum of 4 -6 weeks, with his wife acting as full-time caregiver. This separation is going to place a tremendous strain on the Bender family both physically and financially.
Bill and the Bender family always support others, and now they need our help. All funds raised will be used for Bill’s care, medical bills and supporting the family during this difficult time. Any support you can give is greatly appreciated, as are prayers for full cure. Thank You.
