Hi, my name is Colby.

This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write, but right now I’m asking for help to stay alive.

Earlier this year, the company I work for was acquired. As part of that acquisition, my role was converted into a six-month contract, which ends on January 30th. Since then, I’ve applied to 433 jobs, gone through over 100 interviews, and done everything I possibly can to secure continued employment or an extension — all while fighting colon cancer and undergoing chemotherapy.

In the United States, health insurance is tied to employment. If my contract ends and I lose my job, I also lose the health insurance that is currently paying for my cancer treatment. Without treatment, I will not survive.

There is an option to continue my insurance through COBRA, but the monthly cost is overwhelming — especially without an income. Between medical bills, basic living expenses, and the cost of continuing coverage, I’m facing an impossible gap during a moment when my focus should be on healing.

I have always been someone who works hard, shows up for others, and figures things out. Asking for financial help does not come easily to me. But cancer doesn’t wait, and treatment can’t pause while I search for my next job.
