We have never taken that for granted. The past several months have tested us in ways we could not have anticipated. First, our Brooklyn café was broken into. A few months later, a car crashed into the storefront, causing enough damage that the building was placed under a vacate order. We cannot reopen Brooklyn until repairs are completed and a structural engineer certifies the space as safe.

Then our Harlem café had to close. More than $12,000 in outstanding city fines are blocking us from renewing our operating permit. The permit itself costs $285. We are not allowed to pay the $285 until the $12,000 is settled. That has created a brutal loop. We need to reopen to earn the money required to reopen.
