So some of you may already have heard and followed Laura Lous journey already, but for those who don’t here’s the back story.
Lau’s has Diabetic Retinopathy. She knew the risk of losing her vision was a potential risk with having a baby but with good diabetic control and close monitoring things should be ok. She took that onboard with the love of wanting a family and got preggers.
She was told that the main risk was throughout the pregnancy and once she had her baby things should settle and eventually improve.
Unfortunately this has not been the case and the daily anxiety continues with a few scares of blurred vision and blind spots and the constant fear of how bad things might get. After an appointment last week the docs have said she needed more laser on both eyes mainly the left. The laser is used as a protective mechanism but is also destructive and causes blurry vision.
In the last trimester of pregnancy her eyes were deteriorating rapidly & found out that if she hadn’t had laser they gave her in April she could have been blind by now. The pregnancy had really ramped up the new blood vessel growth and the laser they did then had to be really aggressive to get it under control but this also contributed to swelling and disturbances in the central part of vision.
Unfortunately Lau’s is just below the criteria for the nhs to give their amazing injections that will help to fix things a bit more long term. They are ridiculously expensive so they don’t hand them out freely enough. She has been told going private would be beneficial if they can afford it! It’s £1300 per injection and they think I will need a minimum of 10!!!
But if it’s going to save her sight worth every penny right? and how can you put a price on your vision.
I have asked Lau’s if she is happy for me to do this and she was unsure as isn’t comfortable with asking for money but agrees if it was one of her friends she’d want to help how she could and the price of one beer from her friends could really lift the financial burden and some anxiety on this beautiful new family .
