What is Project Hiu? Project Hiu, whose name derives from the Indonesian word for Shark, 'Hiu,' is a groundbreaking initiative focused on providing alternative sources of income to fishermen operating in one of the world's largest shark fisheries, found in Indonesia. By engaging these fishermen in sustainable tourism, Project Hiu protects sharks and offers a lifeline to these hardworking individuals who spend weeks away from their families and face numerous challenges. We are a student-led shark conservation consortium with over 250 active members aiming to support Australian and Indonesian shark conservation initiatives by providing opportunities for students to work on projects and research with immediate use for local and global conservation initiatives.
