My name is Kanna.  I was born and raised in Japan.  I met Tatsumi Hijikata , the founder of Butoh (Japanese avant-garde  modern dance), when I was a teenager.  Although I left the dance world for a long time, I have rediscovered the beauty and profundity of Butoh recently. 

2 years ago, I had a great opportunity to meet the globally well-known Butoh dancers and became a small part of the photo project to recreate the Tatsumi Hijikata's world. 

The photo book "Yameru Maihime (Sick Dancer)"  by a Japanese photographer, Masahiko Taniguchi was published in Japan last year to celebrate Hijikata's 90th birthday.  All the photos were taken in Akita prefecture where Hijikata was born and raised.  The images were inspired by Hijikata's fictional memoir book, Yameru Maihime , written in 1977~1978.  The book described everyday life of people in Akita through the eyes of a young boy.  It is very unique and abstruse, as many writers and dancers have tried to decipher it in the past. 

The featured dancers in the photo book "Yameru Maihme" have learned the dance from Hijikata directly, and profoundly understood Hijikata's Butoh methods.  Yukio Waguri, Saga Kobayashi, Yoshito Ono, Moe Yamamoto,  Kei Shirasaka, and Yuko Yuki are highly renowned through out the world and actively touring many countries. 

The first photo exhibition took place in Akita last September.  Now, I am trying to show the beauty and the root of Butoh to people in the US.  I am planning to open my first photo exhibition at Japan Foundation in Los Angles on November 5th.  After this, I wish to continue to open exhibitions in different cities, states, and possibly in other counties. 

My wish is to keep Hijikata's legacy alive, but all these activities require money.  So, here, I need your support and help.  Although I am seeking collaborators to minimize expenses, I still need funds to pay for; the right to open photo exhibitions ($2,000), printing, shipping, transportation, rental fees for rehearsals, costumes, guest dancers' expenses for the opening party, advertisement, communication, lunch for volunteers, and many other items.

Butoh now became one of the major modern dance categories.  I am fortunate enough to perform Butoh on stages lately, and taking as many workshops as I can to study more about Butoh.  I go to Akita every year to support the local community of the origin of Butoh.  Butoh is a 'language of body'.   It is a great somatic practice to free your mind and express truth to yourself.  Personally, I have severe arthritis pains from many injuries in the past, and yoga and Butoh are the best ways to rediscover my body to accept myself. To me, it is the most simple 'meditation', and I am very passionate to teach others how to liberate ourselves through Butoh techniques.

カナ(花名)と申します。
10代の頃、暗黒舞踏の創立者、土方巽に出会いました。長い間ダンスからは遠のいてはいましたが、最近、この日本の舞踏の美しさ、奥の深さを再発見し、魅了されています。

土方巽の生誕90年を祝って、去年、写真集が出版されました。写真家谷口雅彦と土方に舞踏を教わったダンサー達が、1977~1978に書かれた土方の著書「病める舞姫」を再現するイメージで作り上げられたものです。「病める舞姫」は、土方が幼少の頃の秋田の暮らしを描いたもので、とても難解な本として知られています。これまでにも、多くの作家やダンサー達が読解しようと試みました。

写真集に登場するダンサー達(和栗由紀夫、小林嵯峨、大野慶人、山本萌と白榊ケイ、雪雄子)は、皆、世界各国で公演を続けている名の知れた方々ばかりです。私は、それらの方々とお会いできるだけではなく、この写真集のエキストラとして参加させて頂ける機会がありましたことを、心から光栄に思っています。

去年の秋田での写真展を皮切りに、この写真展を、私の住んでいる町ロサンゼルスの国際交流基金で、来る11月5日に開催することになりました。これを機会に、他の市や州でも、できましたら他国でも、続けて写真展を開催していけるよう夢見ています。もっと舞踏を勉強するために、秋田に毎年行ったり、機会があれば舞踏ワークショップを受けたりと、私自身の出費も少なくありませんが、日本の舞踏の美しさと、土方の残した舞踏の起源を世界に伝えるため、投資しているつもりでいます。

そこで、皆さまのお力をお借りしたいのです。各写真展には、できるだけ費用が掛からないように後援者を探していくつもりですが、写真展を開く権利($2,000)、印刷、運搬、交通費、オープニングイベントのダンスリハーサルにかかる費用、衣装代、ゲストの経費、広告、通信費、ボランティアのランチ、等々、多々出費がかさんでまいります。

舞踏は、今や世界的に注目を浴び、最も人気のあるダンスカテゴリーでもあります。舞踏とは、「身體の言語」だと思います。個人的には、昔の怪我が祟って、身体中の関節痛に悩まされている中、ヨガと舞踏を通して、再び自分の身体を発見し、受け入れることができた喜びを味わっています。舞踏は、自分の心を自由にし、本当の自分を表現する方法であり、私にとっては、最も純粋な「瞑想法」でもあります。今後、この舞踏を通して、自身を解放する方法を皆様に伝えていきたいと、心から願っています。
