Burning Man Art: Monster by Kitsune Collective

Carly and Erin are childhood friends who have each pursued art and design in their own right and have now come together 20 years later to form the Kitsune Collective.

Carly has participated in multiple temporary works with a focus on manipulating space in an urban environment through fabric, ice, light and shadow. Erin has participated in multiple site-specific works and residencies in Canada, Australia and New Zealand creating uncomfortable or playful environments for viewers to interact with.

This Go Fund Me has been set up to support the first creative venture for this duo, an art installation named Monster. This work will be erected as part of Burning Man 2023. This is an event where once a year, tens of thousands of people gather in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. Astonishingly, Burning Man operates on a gifting economy, no bartering, sponsorships, or cash! The funding raised via this page will be pooled with the Burning Man Honoria Grant the Collective has received to purchase raw materials, solar power for off-grid lighting, and transportation of Monster, our gift to the community of Black Rock City.

This installation is a sculpture series to be made of multi-coloured, plush forms constituting the body of a Monster towering at 12 feet on a plinth base. Extending out from the base is the invitation of a seesaw. As their playmate moves the seesaw up and down Monster will dance and move with them collapsing and expanding. This concept is inspired by the idea of a childhood imaginary friend and the mechanics of a pull-puppet. Monster will invite the community of Black Rock City to feel the joys of play and nostalgia while they connect with sculpture in this whimsical and dynamic way. Please follow the progress of this project at https://kitsune-collective.com/ if it interests you.

If you find yourself in Black Rock City this year we hope you enjoy our gift to the community and encourage you to stop by our Camp “Kitsune Collective” to say hello! If, in the more likely event, Burning Man is not in the cards for your 2023, please let this absurd creation be a reminder to invite play into your life!

To anyone who is willing and able to donate to this endeavour we are so grateful and humbled by your generosity. Thank you for making the gifting economy such a magical success!
