Communities of Color represent the largest number of people dying because of COVID-19 in New York City. Latinos in particular make up the largest group, representing 34% of deaths as of April 6, 2019. Mexican Nationals making-up the largest number. To date at least 400 Mexican Nationals have died in the tri-state area and the numbers are growing. 

For hundreds of Mexican families in New York City, the aspiration to live the American dream has been shattered as husbands, mothers, and other loved ones have lost their life due to COVID-19. Not only are these families mourning the death of their family members but many of them have also lost jobs or have been forced to close their small businesses as the city shuts down.

Mexicans are sinking into a deep emotional and economical well as they try to keep their head above the water. Local government is doing everything it can to meet our community’s needs but it is getting overwhelmed. In moments of crisis, neighbors, especially those in stronger financial positions, must supplement government efforts to help those most in need.

Moreover, Mexican families are traveling throughout the five boroughs to find a funeral home that have the capacity and cultural competency to support them in transporting the remains of their loved ones back to Mexico. Many of them have been exposed and are possibly be COVID-19 positive. 

That is why, we are forging this coalition of Mexican advocates and community-based organizations from across the five boroughs to support Mexican and immigrant families who have lost a loved one due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

We are coming together with the simple objective:
Raise  $100,000.00 to support Mexican families in covering funeral expenses and provide immediate financial support. As Mexicans, our commitment to life is as telling as the way we treat our dead. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity at death, including our fellow paisanos.

Las comunidades de color representan el mayor número de personas que mueren debido a COVID-19 en la ciudad de Nueva York. Los latinos en particular constituyen el grupo más grande, representando el 34% de las muertes al 6 de abril de 2019. Los ciudadanos mexicanos representan el mayor número. Hasta la fecha, al menos 400 ciudadanos mexicanos han muerto en el área de tres estados y el número está creciendo.

Para cientos de familias mexicanas en la ciudad de Nueva York, la aspiración de vivir el sueño americano se ha roto a medida que los esposos, las madres y otros seres queridos han perdido la vida debido a COVID-19. Estas familias no solo están de luto por la muerte de sus familiares, sino que muchas de ellas también han perdido empleos o se han visto obligadas a cerrar sus pequeños negocios a medida que la ciudad se cerró. 

Los mexicanos se están hundiendo en un profundo pozo emocional y económico mientras intentan mantener su cabeza fuera del agua. El gobierno local está haciendo todo lo posible para satisfacer las necesidades de nuestra comunidad, pero está abrumado. En momentos de crisis, los vecinos, especialmente aquellos en posiciones financieras más fuertes, deben complementar los esfuerzos del gobierno para ayudar a los más necesitados.

Además, las familias mexicanas viajan por los cinco distritos para encontrar una funeraria que tenga la capacidad y la competencia cultural para ayudarlas a transportar los restos de sus seres queridos de regreso a México. Muchos de ellos han sido expuestos y posiblemente sean COVID-19 positivos.

Es por eso que estamos formando esta coalición de defensores mexicanos y organizaciones comunitarias de los cinco condados para apoyar a las familias mexicanas e inmigrantes que han perdido a un ser querido debido a la pandemia de COVID-19.

Nos estamos uniendo con el objetivo simple:

Recaudar $ 100,000.00 para ayudar a las familias mexicanas a cubrir los gastos del funeral y brindar apoyo financiero inmediato. Como mexicanos, nuestro compromiso con la vida es tan revelador como la forma en que tratamos a nuestros muertos. Todos merecen ser tratados con dignidad al morir, incluidos nuestros paisanos.
