Burial Costs of Juan de Leon Gutierrez

NoTeDejes Media Foundation is launching a fundraiser to assist the family of Juan de León Gutiérrez, a 16-year old Guatemalan boy who died in U.S. custody on April 30, 2019 just days after crossing the border into the U.S.

Gutiérrez is the third migrant child from Guatemala to die in U.S. custody since December.  Seven-year-old Jackeline Caal died in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Protection on Dec. 8, 2018, and eight-year-old Felipe Gomez Alonzo died on December 24, 2018.

NoTeDejes has been given permission from the family of Juan de León Gutiérrez to raise funds for funeral expenses. The goal is to raise $15,000 to assist with transporting Gutiérrez’s body and burial costs.

“Our goal is to assist immigrants regardless of documentation and to help make their lives easier. Raising funds for the funeral expenses for Juan de León Gutiérrez is very much in line with the mission of our organization, and this effort makes sense given our connections with the Guatemalan community,” said Angel Cordova, NoTeDejes Community Liaison.

“We’re saddened that migrant children keep dying in U.S. custody. Guatemala has been a victim of U.S. foreign policy through the past several decades, and now parts of that country have been devastated by drought, a consequence of climate change. NoTeDejes is eager to assist the Gutiérrez family to bring their child to his final resting place,” said Tony Herrera, Founder of NoTeDejes.
