Dear friends,

Domineque Hakim Marcel Ray, a man on Alabama's death row who I have corresponded with for 5 years, was executed last night. 

One of Domineque's final wishes, that his spiritual advisor (Imam Yusef) be allowed in the execution chamber with him, was denied (despite the fact that Alabama automatically has a pastor in the chamber for condemned prisoners who are Christian.)

Another of Domineque's final wishes--that he receive a proper Muslim burial--is a wish that we are in a position to grant.

Imam Yusef is trying to raise funds so that Domineque's body can be transferred to his care, and he can perform the necessary rituals for a Muslim burial. (As opposed to Domineque's body being buried in the prison cemetery with no ritual or care or love.)  He has raised half the funds, but needs the other half. I told Imam Yusef that I would take responsibility for raising the remaining funds needed so that Domineque can receive the burial he requested.

There are so many levels of injustice to the death penalty and to Domineque's murder at the hands of the state of Alabama last night. Much of that injustice often feels like things we can do very little about. 

But this is something we can do. 

We can support Imam Yusef in granting Domineque this final wish.
