A little back story on our Memaw. In 2003 she lost her husband David "Pete" Burgess (pepaw) to heart disease. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in her 40s and then 2013 discovered that she had stage 4 colon cancer. Being the strong and amazing woman she was she beat her cancer after multiple rounds of chemo and radiation, but then needed to be cared for and could no longer live alone. Her grandchildren Brittany and Kevin along with Kevin's wife Kari took care of her for the past 6 years as she still struggled with many other health issues. She spent her days reading mysteries, playing card games and spending time with her great grandchildren. Last week, a heart attack started that was unnoticed due to the neuropathy and loss of sensation caused by cancer treatments and her diabetes. She suffered a heart attack for five days before the first noticeable symptom was present. Despite the efforts of the incredible staff at St Mary's hospital she passed away on May 9, 2019 surrounded by those she loved. She is survived by a daughter, 2 grandchildren and 6 great grand children and various extended family members and friends. Her life insurance policy unfortunately is not enough to cover the burial. Please help us give our grandmother our final farewells and send her off to her beloved husband who left before her. She will be buried at Dale Memorial Park in Chesterfield County, VA with the help of J. T. Morriss and Son funeral home. The family will receive guests at her grand daughters home for remembrance in the near future.
