Burghley Park Cricket Week Buy A Beer Campaign

For the first time since it is inception in 1959, Burghley Park Cricket Club’s annual Cricket Week has been cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Burghley Park Cricket Week is the flagship fundraising event for the historic cricket club, which is managed and run by a committee of volunteers.

Burghley Park Cricket Club Chairman Simon Stephenson explains more: “The Burghley Park pavilion is a historic landmark within the estate. Set in the picturesque grounds of Burghley House, the pavilion is the focal point of Cricket Week and the heart of the club. Throughout its lifetime it has given senior and junior cricketers of Stamford one of the best vantage points in the county to enjoy cricket. However, it was built in the Victorian era and like all buildings over 100 years old, it is costly to repair and keep running. Not being able to host our flagship fundraising event could have far reaching effects on the club and its grounds if we don’t act soon.”

Thankfully Burghley Park CC have managed to secure a grant from local firm Mick George which will provide essential funds for some of the internal repairs, but the club have a big job ahead of them and will need further local support. Simon continues, “We need to improve our changing room facilities, provide electricity to the score board and upgrade our kitchen facilities, as well as carry out essential maintenance on the pavilion. We are solely reliant on player subscriptions and one-off events to raise money for our much-loved club. Every year we welcome over 2,500 people to Cricket Week and we hope to capture some of that local support by launching a Go Fund Me page to help raise the remaining monies. Cricket Week is vital in our ability to provide cricket to the community of Stamford, which has been enjoyed for generations – with hopefully many more generations to come”

The Burghley Park pavilion was originally built with the proceeds of local fundraising in the mid 1890’s when it was deemed the Club was strong enough to warrant the building of a state-of-the-art pavilion. Historic committee meeting minutes show that Mr John Wolston was awarded the contract to build the original pavilion for just £287, which was opened in 1894 by the Marquess of Exeter.

Simon concludes: “We know these are challenging times for everyone economically. However, without local donations and support we simply do not know if we can keep the club, and its pavilion, running. Our hope is that all those supporters who would normally enjoy a beer or two at Cricket Week could donate the same amount to the Go Fund Me page so we can return in 2021 with a new and improved Pavilion and our very popular Cricket Week.'
