Opening North America's first Bunny Cafe

Donation protected
We are in the final stretch of opening Vancouver's first Bunny Cafe . 2020 has done its best to throw many hurdles in our path, but we are making like rabbits and hopping our way through them all, one at a time!

I am Michelle Furbacher, and I'm the owner of Catfe , Vancouver (and Western Canada)'s first cat cafe. When Catfe opened its doors nearly five years ago, no one thought this type of business was even possible in our city... today, after years filled with joyful moments of sharing our love of animals with Vancouverites, we have adopted out almost one thousand cats to loving homes! In December 2018, we held a hugely popular three week long 'hop-up' bunny cafe event  at Catfe, hosting the charming and adorable bunnies from Rabbitats rescue . Rabbitats was such a great group of people to work with, and I knew right then and there that I wanted to partner with them to shine a light on their cause, and join them in helping to make a difference in the lives of beautiful, sweet bunnies in need.

We are opening The Bunny Cafe  so that we can apply our successful adoption model to help abandoned and homeless rabbits, while providing a sanctuary where they are safe, happy and well taken care of. My dream is that the bunny cafe concept will catch on just as cat cafes did, and they'll start 'hopping up' in every major city... this project is for the big-hearted animal lovers of Vancouver, and I'm so excited at the thought of spreading love and awareness to help the buns throughout the Lower Mainland, the province, the country, and the world, by bringing this concept to North America.

The global pandemic threw a wrench in our cafe plans, and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our community, it didn't make sense to open as a full service cafe at this time. When we open this winter, for now it will be as a retail shop and lounge for visiting with adoptable bunnies. We plan to upgrade to a cafe once we are on the other side of COVID-19, but in the meantime, we just want to get those doors open and share the bunny love!

The Bunny Cafe will be located at 1696 Venables Street, at the corner of Commercial Drive. We are excited to join our neighbours in bringing something unique, fluffy and fun to the already vibrant community of the Drive. We are halfway there on construction, but have experienced several delays and unforeseen extra costs along the way. In the meantime, we continue to pay rent monthly, which has been draining our funds. We turn to bun lovers near and far, in hopes that they can lend a paw to help us through this last stretch. We are aiming to be open our doors before the year is through.

If anything good can come out of 2020, let's make The Bunny Cafe happen -- for the love of buns everywhere!

Thank you <3
