Bald for Bums: Three Generations, One Brave Woman, and a Whole Lot of Hair Loss
Hi! We’re a granny, a daddy and a 8-year-old boy, and we’re about to do something pretty drastic. We’re shaving all our hair off—not because we lost a bet, but because we want to help save lives.
This fundraiser is for someone very special to us—a woman in her early 30s who’s part of our extended family, not by blood but by bond. She’s one of those rare people who lights up every room she walks into, even while walking through one of the darkest journeys anyone can face.
Earlier this year, she was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. It’s already spread to her liver and lungs. Just typing those words feels impossible. But if you met her, you wouldn’t believe it—because she’s determined to keep living, laughing, and loving harder than ever. She’s been through more than most people will in a lifetime. She and her sister lost their dad when they were children, and just recently, they also lost their beloved mum to cancer. It’s a story that feels too cruel to be real—and yet, here she is. Still smiling. Still fighting. Still hoping.
And we want to fight with her.
So here’s who we are and why we’re going bald:
Sue (63):
“I’m shaving my head because I’ve seen what cancer can do, but I’ve also seen what love, community, and research can do. I want this young woman—and every person fighting this disease—to know they are not alone. My hair will grow back. We want a future where everyone gets that chance.”
Abe (33):
“I’m doing this because this beautiful friend of ours deserves more time. More research. More awareness—especially around bowel cancer in young people. It’s not just something that happens to older folks. The more people who know the signs, the better chance we have of catching it early. So yes, I’ll be bald—but if it sparks one conversation, it’s worth every strand.”
Noah (8):
“I’m shaving my head because I want to help people. I think my hair will grow back faster than Daddys and Granny’s, and I like being part of something big. I want people to donate because I think she’s really brave and she deserves to feel better.”

Why this matters:
Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in many countries, and cases in younger people are rising. The signs are often missed or dismissed—because who expects someone in their 30s to have bowel cancer?
Our friend wants to change that. She wants people to talk about their bums. To listen to their bodies. To push for answers when something doesn’t feel right. And she wants better research, better treatments, and better odds for the people with bowel cancer.
We can’t take away her diagnosis. But we can take away our hair—and maybe, with your help, take away some of the power this disease holds.
So if you’ve got a few spare pounds, please consider donating. Help us fund the research that might one day save a life. Help us honour a woman who’s already given so much—even while facing the unimaginable.
Just to add a massive thanks to Joanne from H&G Salon at Empire House 1 Slaithwaite who has agreed to do the dirty deed for free to support our efforts.
Thank you for reading, thank you for sharing, and thank you for helping us go Bald for Bums.
