On July 28, 2005, our Texas Delt brother Jason Bullmore took his own life. The tragedy took all of us by surprise - we had no idea that he was struggling with depression.
Jason grew up in Lubbock as an only child of Jim and Susie Bullmore. He pledged Delt in Fall 1993 and became fast friends with the entire class. Jason was a unique character with his own style, big boisterous laugh (often combined with a knee slap) and a truly great friend. We will always remember Jason’s spirit.
I have long wanted to do something to honor Jason, and to mark 20 years since his passing I thought this was the time to act. I have been in contact with current Delt President David Cox to brainstorm ideas, and we finally came up with a concept that hits on all cylinders. Here it is.
On July 4th, 2025 much of the state of Texas experienced intense rainfall and flooding. In Kerr County, the Guadalupe River flooded entire communities, including most notably and tragically the bunkhouses at Camp Mystic. The same storm knocked down two massive trees at the Delt House, one of which provided important shade for gameday tailgates next to the newly constructed Delt Pavilion.
On a separate note, David shared with me that in the last three consecutive years a Texas fraternity member has committed suicide. It’s of such concern that the University created a council of fraternity leaders to discuss and address the issue. David is the chair of the committee. Delt leadership in action!
The idea for the Bullmore Memorial is to plant a tree near the one that we lost in the storm, with a circular bench around it and a memorial plaque. If we can raise the money quickly we have the tree installed in time for one of the home games this season.
Whether we call this the Bullmore Memorial, The Bullmorial, or the Bullring, we hope it becomes a safe place where people can sit with friends and open up about their own feelings and struggles and find compassion and friendship.
Delt Chris Utz and his company Utz Environmental Services will be executing the installation. The faster we can raise the money the sooner we can get this done, and maybe all of us can enjoy it at a home game this season. HOOK EM!
