Building the way for a healthy heart

Hi, my name is Tori, and I have started this fundraiser for my stepdad, Brett Johnson. This man holds an extraordinarily special place in my heart and means the absolute world to our babies who just want their Poppa to be healthy again. Brett is always the very first person to jump in and help those around him without question and has the most giving spirit; it is now our turn to help him!

Brett is currently on day 10 (as of 6/12) of an extensive hospital stay where he has been diagnosed with Afib and Congestive Heart Failure. Please see further details below.

Misdiagnosis and Malpractice - Approximately 3 months ago, at a visit to his doctor, Brett was given an EKG and found that his heart rate was 225 (normal range is 60-100). Instead of being sent to the ER as he should have been, he was given "heart medication" and sent home. It has since been determined that his heart was in Afib at that time and has been in Afib for 3 months, ongoing and untreated. He returned approximately 1 month later and was treated for pneumonia. His condition continued to deteriorate, landing him in the ER 10 days ago, where he was admitted with Afib and Congestive Heart Failure. It was determined that the medication his doctor had given him was actually not a heart medication and that the pneumonia diagnosis was a misdiagnosis and was actually Congestive Heart Failure, caused by the untreated Afib.

Current Condition - Brett's heart is currently functioning at only half-capacity and is stuck in Afib as he awaits a surgery that will hopefully aid in correcting it. Each medication/procedure attempted to get his heart out of Afib throughout his hospital stay has failed as his heart is very weak. The last attempted procedure was cardioversion (they shocked his heart), which was attempted four times to get his heart back into rhythm but ultimately failed. This has also caused problems with his kidney function. The next step is to perform an ablation surgery that cauterizes parts of the heart that are causing it to be out of rythm.

As one can imagine, the medical bills from the extensive hospital stay and treatments will, without a doubt, be astronomical, along with surgery expenses, lost wages due to missed work, etc. The doctor's negligence has come at a significant cost to Brett, not only monetarily but most importantly, with his health. I am asking that if anyone can donate to help ease some of this stress as they go through this time, you would. This support can help Brett focus on healing and recovery rather than finances. We would also really appreciate all of the prayers that we can get that God will look after him and heal him. Our family so appreciates you and from the bottom of our hearts - THANK YOU!
