We are looking to build the role of music in the communities of the Blackfeet Reservation. Not only this, but we aim to provide accessibility to music and musical instruments for families and schools. The power of the human voice and the heartbeat of the drum have always been with us since time immemorial. The acoustic guitar and the fiddle have had a history of use in the communities of the reservation. While the guitar has had more of a popular and wide spread presence in the past century, the fiddle has fallen by the wayside and become more rare within the population.
Band, choir, and traditional singing/drumming are taught in our local school districts, though orchestra is overlooked due to the lack of establishment of string instruments, as well as the sheer cost of the equipment. With a population as large as ours, we believe that by reintroducing the violin, as well as the viola, cello, and bass back to the community, that it can strengthen the role of music for the youth.
One goal we have is to help build and sustain an orchestra program. Through generous donations in the past few years, we have been able to procure 2 violins, 1 cello, & 1 contrabass. Although at one point we wish to see a symphonic level program with a great many available orchestral string instruments, we are setting up a beginning goal of procuring an additional 4 violins, 3 violas, and 1 cello through local rent-to-own programs.
For this initial goal of 8 string instruments, the combined expected cost will be around $150-$200 a month for 2-3 years. For now we will set the goal $1500 to cover around 10 months. Eventually we hope to expand our funding to be able to fully purchase used string instruments.
