It was early 2018 when we sent out Keiryuji's Fundraiser letter for the project of building the Hondo (Main Hall), where we practice zazen and hold ceremonial services. Thanks to your generous donations and, from some of you, physical effort, we were able to buy the materials and do all the work to build it. It ended up being a truly special place with a combination of wood and centuries-old-stone walls. We did not only finish the Hondo, with a beautiful altar and Kaisando (Founders' Hall), we also finished a whole new floor at the third level, with two bedrooms, an ironing room, an outside toilet and shower and the tiling of the dining room floor.
(Inauguration of the Hondo, June 2019)
In June 2019 all this work came together in a beautiful inauguration of the Hondo. This ceremony was conducted by Junryu Kuroda Roshi from Japan and witnessed by Tenkei Roshi and Myoho Roshi from Zen River, together with many dear Shanga members and friends. After a well-deserved rest, we are now up for a new adventure which is the kitchen. Up to now, we use the kitchen in the family house. This means a lot of carrying back and forth of food and dishes from one building to another, especially now that the number of participants is starting to rise. It would also be nice for the residents and participants to have a kitchen that they can use without disrupting the privacy of the family.
(On the right side you see the ruin wall where the kitchen will be.)
It will be quite a project because right now there is just a ruin of what used to be a water cistern. It will need walls, a roof, floor, windows, water pipes, electric wiring, kitchen cabinets, countertop, kitchen stove, sinks, etc. Because we can do most of the work ourselves we can keep the budget low. We estimate that the budget will be around 8000 euros. This is why we ask for your help because we can not pay this from our regular income. We will be very grateful for any donation that would make this project possible.
