Hi everyone, my name is Amelia! Thanks for being here :)
This February, I will be volunteering with the Igulu Foundation in Uganda. Founded in 2018 and officially registered with the Ugandan government in 2020, the Igulu Foundation's mission is to support orphans, vulnerable children, and single mothers while building a more self-reliant, educated, and resilient community.
What does the foundation do?
The foundation runs community-based programs centered on dignity, care, and opportunity:
Care and Support for Orphans
- The foundation provides a safe and loving home for children who have lost parents or lack stable care. It meets their basic needs, including shelter, nutritious food, schooling, clothing, and medical care, supporting approximately 15 children ranging from early childhood through adolescence.
Education and Child Sponsorship
- Igulu helps children stay in school by covering school fees (school is not free in Uganda) and providing essential learning materials, giving them access to education and a path toward a more secure future.
Support for Single Mothers
- The foundation supports single mothers through basic needs assistance, emotional support, and skill-building opportunities that promote independence and long-term stability.
Community Development
- Igulu works with local farmers by providing quality seeds and tools, helping families strengthen food security and build sustainable livelihoods through agriculture and practical skills.
Arts, Crafts, and Vocational Training
- Creative programs and emerging vocational training initiatives, such as sewing, help community members develop skills that can generate long-term income and independence.
Volunteer Engagement
- The foundation hosts volunteers who support education, childcare, community projects, and daily operations, fostering meaningful cross-cultural exchange while strengthening local initiatives.
How can my money help?

$35 → Hygiene products for all girls for one month
$50 → School supplies for one child for two weeks
$75 → Internet and learning support for all children for one month
$100 → Medical care for all children for one month
$150 → Bedding and essentials for two children for one month
$250 → School fees & materials for one child for one month
$500 → School meals and education support for one child for two months
$1,150 → School fees & materials for one child for one full term (4 months)
$2,300 → Sponsors two children for a full year (education, meals, transportation, supplies)
$7,500 → Covers the entire monthly operating budget, providing food, schooling, medical care, bedding, and utilities for all children
Every donation raised through this fundraiser goes directly toward meeting real, essential needs and strengthening long-term programs that help families thrive.
This experience is about more than short-term assistance. It is about learning directly from the community, supporting locally led and sustainable programs, and contributing to impact that lasts far beyond my time there. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in Ugandan culture and work alongside local leaders who are creating meaningful change every day.
