Hebrew Tabernacle, the premier Reform Congregation of Washington Heights, founded in 1906, was established in our current home in 1973. We will be celebrating half a century in our fabulous building on Fort Washington Avenue, and have been giving our building a much needed upgrade. Our air conditioning system was installed back in the 70's and we are in the process of replacing it with a new, energy efficient and much needed greener system.
We're proud to serve as a place of worship for several other religious congregations such as Nuevas Buenas, Fort Tryon Jewish Center, and Uptown Community Church. Our building has been a safe haven for many in the community but is now in need of critical repairs to the air conditioning systems.
We’ve secured the majority of the proposed costs of roughly $450,000.00 and are asking for your help in getting us over that last hurdle. Our goal for this fundraiser is $18,000.
This money will go towards a modern system which will cool and refresh our building, including our beautiful 100+ year old sanctuary and our wonderful social hall, the only local venue available with sound system, stage and seating for hundreds of guests! We have hosted many life cycle events, local school galas, political meetings and the local Interfaith Thanksgiving along with many other houses of worship who don't have such a large meeting space.
This upgrade will keep our building functioning as the beacon of warmth and welcome that it has been, from welcoming survivors of the Holocaust in the 1940’s to immigrants from places far and wide. Hebrew Tabernacle has been in Washington Heights for over 115 years soon to be 50 years in the building at the corner of 185th and Fort Washington Avenue.
