At just 16 years old, Kalema Hasifa faced an impossible choice that no child should have to make—abandon her education to support her siblings or continue learning to build a better future. Through the wisdom of her mother and guidance from her Aunt Jackie, Kalema chose education.

That single decision changed not only her life but created a ripple effect that continues to transform an entire community.

After completing her education, Kalema established Great Expeditions in 2013, a successful company showcasing East Africa's treasures—from majestic gorillas to the rich heritage of indigenous peoples and breathtaking mountain hikes. But Kalema never forgot what education meant to her life.

She dedicated a majority portion of her enterprise's success to founding the Lungala Education Centre, a private, self-funded primary school serving the Maziba community in Uganda that previously had no nearby primary school—where children had no path to break the cycle of poverty.

In Uganda's Lungala community, too many children have been denied the most basic opportunity that should be every child's birthright: an education. Before Kalema established the Lungala Education Centre, families had no nearby primary school.

Think about that for a moment. No place to learn to read. No place to discover mathematics. No place to feed your curiosity. No place to develop the skills that would offer even the faintest chance at breaking cycles of poverty.

Now, the success of Lungala Education Centre has created both a wonderful and challenging situation. Parents are pleading for their children as young as three years old to attend this school—to give them even a glimpse of a hopeful future.

Without completing at least primary education, these bright children may never sustain themselves economically or have the possibility of secondary education that could transform their families' lives for generations.
