In an effort to disrupt inequality and support Black and Brown girls in developing an understanding of the issues that impact their lives while developing skills that can be used to advocate for them selves We.REIGN, Inc. has developed a four-day workshop that fosters the development of 21st century and non-cognitive skills.
Philadelphia schools are plagued with many of the issues that impact high need, urban school districts. The four-day workshop created by We REIGN, Inc. goes beyond traditional academic skills and focuses on the skills of learning along with tools for social, emotional and physical well-being. Many schools do not offer direct instruction focused on how to learn and setting personal goals, how to build positive relationships with peers and staff, self-advocacy, stress management, or tools for developing healthy life style habits. Yet, it is clear that these skills are crucial to the long-term success of children growing up in high need areas, particularly girls of color.
We.REIGN is planning a summer program that offers what traditional schools do not, the opportunity to develop non-cognitive skills and tools for successfully navigating the world we live in. Our program also addresses issues faced by girls who attend middle and high school in the city of Philadelphia providing an opportunity to identify and address common experiences while developing advocacy skills. We REIGN will prepare girls (12-18) for success through the use of interactive, engaging programming that is relevant to their everyday lives.
We have been able to partner with organizations that provide in-kind services such as tickets to movies and theater shows, museums, and other events. We are in need of funding for snacks, consumable materials for projects (markers, poster board, paper, stickers, glitter glue, etc.), transportation cost, and funding to rent space. We would also like to provide each participant with a parting gift (yoga mat and t-shirt) at the conclusion of the program.
The program is set to begin August 2017. The plan is to host four, 4-day workshops focused on Academic Perseverance, Academic Mindset, and Academic Behaviors. Girls will also practice effective learning strategies/non-cognitive skills, strategies for goal setting, tools for managing stress, strategies for building healthy safe relationships and the skills needed to effectively advocate for themselves and other girls using a restorative framework for communication and engagement.
The cost breakdown is as follows:
Daily Rental fee for Workshop Location: 4- day workshop x4 @$100/day = $1600.00
Food (fruit and veggie tray, drinks, popcorn, pizza, paper products & delivery cost) = $75.00/session = 1200.00
Transportation: Septa Day Pass (one outing) $8.00 x 15 (girls) = $120.00
Supplies:
Washable Markers 5 boxes x 23.99 = 119.95
5 boxes of pens = 2.09 = 10.45
1 pack 28lb paper = 28.89
General Printing and Copying for Activities:
$250.00
Parting Gift for each participant who completes the program ($20 t-shirt & $20 yoga mat) = $1600.00
The total cost to run four weeks of programming is
$4929.28. To begin the program in August and service between 10-15 girls each session we need to have funding secured on or before by July 1. This will ensure the time needed to confirm space, order and prepare materials and notify participants and their families.
As a new community based organization focused on supporting Black and Brown girls in becoming their own advocates the opportunity to offer this program in Philadelphia will fulfill our mission. This program will provide the girls who attend with a strong foundation for future success.
We are grateful for every donation. We recognize that each donation brings us closer to our goals and gets us closer to the opportunity to disrupt inequality and support Black and Brown girls in creating and securing the future they deserve.
