Building and Repairing Lions enclosures
Hi, my name is Abigail Putterill. I am currently living in Palmer, Alaska, USA, and am fundraising to aid my family's conservation efforts on our own game farm in Zimbabwe, Bally Vaughan Game Park Mwanga Lodge .
This is my campaign:
Lions Lives Matter -Support these two Lion Cubs
Lions (Panthera leo) are magnificent, iconic apex predators of Africa (with a small residual Asiatic lion population in Asia), which are increasingly threatened in the wild by over-hunting pressures, poaching, human-wildlife conflict, and habitat destruction.
The numbers of lions in the wild have decreased drastically in recent years. Bally Vaughan Wildlife Park was established to provide a safe haven for rescued wildlife 40 years ago and is family-run. Our first lions were rescued from a poaching incident in the Masaai Mara, Kenya – and sent to Bally Vaughan by Dr. Richard Leaky, who was then KWS Director.
That was 40 years ago… since then our sanctuary has focused on maintaining this valuable East African bloodline, as well as receiving some rescued Zimbabwean lions, and many other animals and birds.
Our conservation ethos and goals are four-fold:
Rescue and care for, needy wild animals and birds
Preserve viable genetics/samples of wildlife species in a conservation “nest egg” environment
To educate and reach out to, and inspire, the next generation of conservationists, mainly in children
Where possible, to re-habilitate individual wild animals back into a safe, wild environment
Lion Cubs – to maintain the Kenyan line it has been necessary to ensure the continuity of the blood-line with new members, in an aging lion population (lions live 15yrs max in the wild). To this end, Ariela and Nora were born at the end of 2019. These delightful and beautiful lion cubs are doing extremely well, and will very soon (in the next 2 months), need to be moved to an upgraded / suitable enclosure.
We estimate that USD$15 000 is needed to build a large living enclosure for the two lion cubs, with suitable environmental enhancements, that will enable them to grow, and enjoy a comfortable life.
Tourism was stopped in Zimbabwe as a result of the pandemic – the main source of income for all the animal’s needs, and repairs, maintenance, and development of their enclosures.
As a result, we are making this earnest appeal for funding - your donation will help these two special lion cubs, by building them a specific enclosure to live in.
Your donations will also be an investment in the vital environmental education of thousands of Zimbabwe school children (who tour the sanctuary every year), and of the public - to learn about and appreciate the value of lions; and therefore encourage others to preserve their species: through the support of Ariela and Norah.
Due to the severe challenges posed by COVID 19, and the extreme economic strain in Zimbabwe, we would appreciate any help concerned folk are able to give, to sponsoring the construction of a secure place for these magnificent mega cats.
