Building an Education Centre, Portland Cottage JA

The ‘No Child Left Behind Foundation’ (NCLB for short) was launched in June 2020 by Micheal and Jhamelia McCarthy after observing the disproportionate gap that is present with children and young people not being able to access the necessary resources that they need to excel in education due to their financial status. No Child Left Behind Foundation have the desire to see all children gain access to the necessary resources and learning services such as library, internet access, homework club, etc.

One of our immediate projects is to build an education centre for the children and young people in Portland Cottage, Clarendon, Jamaica. Within our vision of this education center, we want to create an environment that children and young people can study, do their homework/projects if they cannot do so efficiently at home. We aim to host long term services every quarter or annually where the children and young people can develop other skills and build community relations such as but not limited to summer camps, screenplays, concerts, spelling bee, photography, arts and craft.

There are many children who grow up with huge ambitions but by the time that they leave school, their ambitions and dreams are short lived due to financial hardship. Again, one of NCLB’s aim and mission is to deliver services to all children and young people regardless of their circumstances. The programs that we hope to deliver will support children through all phase of their education. This project will not only support children and young people but also support and empower parents to bring out the best in their children. We know that by working alongside families will assist in building children and young people’s confidence and can give them a positive view of themselves and what they can accomplish. We know that by providing these resources and services, it will enhance and improve the chances for young people in terms of further education and opportunities for employment.

We have recently acquired a plot of land where the proposed site will be developed. We have secured donations of computers and few school resources that will help to deliver the vital necessities to the community of Portland Cottage, Clarendon, Jamaica.
