When Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica, hundreds of thousands of people were affected — including an estimated 2,600 individuals living with sickle cell disease (SCD). For those managing a chronic illness, losing access to clean water, food, medication, or safe housing can quickly become life-threatening.
As a registered non-profit organisation with an established presence in Jamaica and the UK, My Friend Jen is committed to stepping in and providing targeted support. With the help of your donations, we plan to:
• Provide emergency care packages with food, clean water, and essential medication.
• Support temporary housing and accommodation for displaced families and volunteers.
• Coordinate medical and transport assistance so patients can continue accessing care.
• Help families rebuild and heal through mental wellness support.
For years, My Friend Jen has worked to educate, empower, and support people affected by sickle cell through workshops, advocacy, and community outreach. In Jamaica, we’ve already donated books to hospitals, supplied a water dispenser to the Sickle Cell Unit, and partnered with others to provide care packages and meals for patients and healthcare professionals.
We understand that there are many relief efforts happening, and people may be unsure where to give. As a trusted, long-standing organisation already on the ground, we’re also in partnership with existing relief initiatives to ensure coordinated, transparent, and compassionate support for those who need it most.
❤️ Your donation will help us make these plans a reality and bring urgent relief and lasting hope to Jamaica’s sickle cell community.
