Building a Library in Gouloumbou

We are raising money to completely build a library at the CEM (Middle School) in the village of Gouloumbou in Tambacounda, Senegal!

Gouloumbou and the surrounding villages have no running water, electricity or internet connection. However the middle school does have a motivated and dedicated group of teachers who can make the most of a library for improving the education of their students. Often the teachers go months without payment because they believe that the education of their students is the most important aspect of their lives.

CEM Gouloumbou is the recipient of several scholarship programs through the Peace Corps and other NGOs that encourage enrollment and tuition assistance for girls. Only 2% of university students in Senegal are women and CEM Gouloumbou is working to change that by engaging girls in special clubs and activities that will help empower them and provide agency in the future.

Since the area doesn't have internet access, access to books as a source of education, creativity and inspiration for the future is incredibly important. For years the school has been accumulating books for a library, but at the current rate of funding it will be at least 10 years until they are able to fund a library on our own.

Right now the middle school has a variety of books that are kept in various storage areas, but lacks a dedicated space to store and categorize these books for use by the students. The goal of $5000 will not only completely build, paint and connect the library, but will also cover the costs of purchasing 250 additional books for the library.

The funds are needed before the end of May so that construction can begin before the rainy season in Tambacounda, which makes construction very difficult.  The construction itself will be overseen by the Principal of the school, Ousseynou Diaby and a local Peace Corps Volunteer, Alex Hammerslough.

If you feel the urge to support education, books and development, please donate to our school!
