My name is Mary and I have been an orchestra teacher for over 30 years. I have taught thousands of students and they all have a place in my heart... but then I met Fred. He was in third grade and he was adorable... an earnest learner, quiet, always doing his best. As I got to know Fred, something told me that I needed to keep watch over this child.
Fred's mom tragically passed away the next year when he was in fourth grade, leaving Fred and his four siblings without a parent. Leaving her funeral, I hugged him tightly, kissed the top of his head, and promised that I would always be there for him.
I moved on to teach at the high school the next school year but kept tabs on Fred. Four years ago, he rejoined my class in high school and I have had the fortune of watching him grow and thrive without the advantages many other students have. Fred plays viola, runs cross country and track, and gets excellent grades. He serves as a teacher aide for one of my classes, helping with all of the extra tasks required to keep the orchestra running. Fred is kind, compassionate, curious, hardworking, dedicated, and a great friend.
Fred will be attending the University of Louisville in the fall, majoring in psychology. He wants to be a mental health professional for children and adolescents. He is going to be a great one.
Fred needs help for this next step. My family has purchased a car for Fred and he is currently practicing to get his driver's license. Transportation will allow him to get a job to pay his expenses and take himself to college. He could use help to pay for his first year of car insurance and maintenance on the car. Any funds remaining after a year of insurance will be used for Fred's books and fees for college.
Fred won't have a big graduation party like most of his peers, but with your help, he can comfortably ease into this next stage of his life. An investment in Fred is a sound investment. Fred will be the man who continually pays it forward, and I cannot wait to see what his next chapter holds!
