Building a Disc Golf Course - Meat Bone

(DONATION REWARDS info at the end of write up)

For the last 3.5 years my friends and I have been building a disc golf course on 86 acres in Haverhill, MA.  The land has a mix of woods and open space and 120’ of elevation which has allowed us to create a very diverse set of holes.  Last month, we finally reached a point where we were ready to open the course to the public, and with baskets lent to us by Fly By Disc Golf, we were able to have a soft opening!  The course is called Meat Bone, a name that comes from a friendly heckle when a buddy’s shot “left a little meat on the bone”.  Currently, we have 18 playable holes, but we are a long way from the finished product we are striving for.  We want this to be a premier course, and to get to that point, we still have a lot of work to do.  This is an enormous challenge, but we are fully embracing it.  All of the feedback we’ve received from our soft opening has been instrumental in helping us plan our next steps.

The purpose of this fundraiser is to help us transition Meat Bone into the high-level, permanent course we want it to be.  All funds raised will be used to improve the course: buy and install professional level baskets (Dynamic Discs Veterans), tee pads, and hole signs; create a parking area; buy a large mower to maintain the field portion of the course; buy/rent a wood chipper to clean up brush piles and make chips for greens, paths, and fairways; create walkways through areas with tough/muddy terrain; build a course welcome board and lost and found; buy miscellaneous tools for course clean-up, opening/clearing fairways, and thinning rough; and cover several other costs that come with making a top cut course.

Long term, we really want the course to be fun and inviting to everyone.  Thus, we have plans for multiple layouts and even a second 18-hole course (9 extra holes have already been roughly planned and carved out).  On top of building a great course, we also want to create an enjoyable, community vibe.  Once covid is far behind us, we plan on having get-togethers with music and games, weekly leagues, and “Meat & Greet” cookouts with our tournaments.  The woods have plenty of walking paths, and there’s also an excellent ice cream shop next door we’d love to connect with.

Last thing…  The name Meat Bone sounds like a silly name but it’s given the course a real identity that we’ve all rallied behind to make the dream a reality. At first, when you hear the name Meat Bone, it makes you smile, but after you smile, you feel compelled to add something to this identity to make it special.  Anyone who’s worked on the course gets a meat nickname (Hank became Shank, Taylor is T-Bone, and Reb is now Rib) and all our holes have meat themed names like “Why Brisket?” “Salami Get This Straight”, and “The Tenderizer”.  All this silliness comes from a love of each other, a love for this course and a love for Disc Golf.  And WITH YOUR HELP, we’ll be able to turn this into a great course that the whole community can love.

Shanks for your support!
