Build a New Daphne Animal Shelter!
Donation protected
In 1989 the City of Daphne, Alabama reached 5,000 residents. As mandated by state law, animal control had to be operated in the city, and that's when the Daphne Animal Shelter was built. Daphne has since grown to over 26,000 residents (as of 2016) and the shelter has not been expanded or improved since then. As the city and its human population grows, so will the pet population.
Some of the many problems with the current shelter include the following: there is rarely open space for animals being brought in as most of the few cages are consistently full, the layout is inefficient for animal welfare and shelter staff working conditions, the cats are confined to cages and never get out unless adopted or euthanized, the dogs have a very small exercise yard, there is only one washer and dryer for the whole facility, there is little storage, there is no efficient space for potential adopters to interact with the animal(s) they are interested in adopting (especially for cats).
As a city, we can do better for our animal friends. The welfare of these cats and dogs is up to us, as they cannot speak for themselves. The mayor and city council have expressed support in our endeavor to get a new shelter built, but we need help, specifically financial help, as this will be an expensive project. If we can get public support and funding the city will see the residents and community care about this project and will be more willing to get this project going at a quicker rate.
We are asking anyone who wants to see conditions improved for the animals who come into the shelter to please donate any amount you can--no amount is too small.
The shelter is open to the public from Monday-Friday, 9 am - 4 pm if you'd like to see the facility for yourself (and the animals there always appreciate a friendly visit!). Their address is 7145 Johnson Road, Daphne, AL 36526.
