Build in Borneo - The Sunflower Centre Miri

As a special topic in our Urban and Regional Planning course, this fundraiser will help 14 students deliver a community development project set in Northern Borneo at The Sunflower Centre in Miri, Sarawak. The centre caters to children and young adults with special needs who struggle physically and/or mentally.

The centre supports students through educational and job opportunities, and developing work and social skills. There are 86 current students and 11 staff including a pediatrician, psychologist, physiotherapist and speech therapist. Public donations maintain the centre, and this opportunity will help to support the students, staff and the programs and activities they run.

Our project plan is to build a playground and sensory garden with the donations from this fundraiser. When we arrive in Miri, we will connect with the students and community to deliver what they need and want to see at the centre.

Our personal trips and accommodation are self-funded; the donations to this GoFundMe will be used for materials such as plants, tools, paint and wood.

Any contributions not spent on the materials will be donated to The Sunflower Centre.

We are heading to Borneo for three weeks from the 18th of November 2022, and we are lucky to have this opportunity to learn about the culture and environment on this island Southeast Asian Island.
