In 2018, reading Black history books was banned in a Vancouver (Canada) school library. Aisha Kiani and Rakim responded by building a digital library designed to supported students, parents and public service workers in arts, education, healthcare, and justice sectors in challenging racism, queer and transphobia, and ableism, in schools and school curriculum.
7 years later, I Dream Library is a contemporary education platform creating access to diverse stories in schools galleries and museums around the world. Our work assures profound immersion with diverse stories across global education platforms. We are a queer, trans, neurodivergent, disabled and BIPoC led organization that presents workshops, artwork, literary curation, anti-oppression education, and intersectional equity evaluation frameworks rooted in collaborative care, abolition, transformative justice and disability justice.
This campaign is a call for community investment in building I Dream Library in the real world, and increase our capacity for changemaking through creating jobs and a home base to research, teach, imagine, design and build the future that cares for us all.
What is the I Dream Library and Center for Education Design™️?
AN EQUITABLY EMPLOYED TEAM team to further our work in research curriculum development, evaluation, library curation, interdisciplinary art and spatial design
And a home base that includes :
- TEACHING STUDIOS offering workshops, classes, and labs for students, educators and community. Studios to design, production and presentation of literary installations and artworks
- LIBRARY / ARCHIVE of text, objects, and artworks
- THEATER to showcase the arts and education
- GALLERY to showcase and teach the work of local and global artists
- BOOKSHOP that retails education tools, artworks, books and furnishings
Your Contribution Supports:
- employing a core team (admin + operating cost)
- funding a space that hosts a library, gallery, teaching spaces, bookshop, studio and offices
We believe that through education, a safer world for marginalized communities is possible. Partnership across disciplines to research, teach, workshop, present, and exchange learning with arts institutions, school districts, community groups, universities and colleges have been invaluable. Your support allows us to continue the critical work of driving equity forward in times when many are tempted to choose silence as survival.
