Over the last 10 years, I've dedicated myself to the family farm; turning the land over to nature to create a wildlife haven and rewilding project. The land regenerators (pigs, donkeys, goats) are here. Nature has rebounded. BUT, I need YOUR help to fundraise essential wildlife-friendly perimeter fencing to turn this Suffolk sanctuary into a true rewilded site. It's a very simple yet expensive solution that will instantly transform the farm into a thriving rewilding project.
By installing the wildlife-friendly fencing I can;
- Keep my animals in
- Allow wildlife to move in and out freely
- Welcome visitors and the community to immerse themselves in nature
- Regenerate ancient farmland
- Provide sanctuary for our native flora and fauna to thrive
- Ultimately encourage other landowners to start similar projects
I'm Geoff Wakeling and am the custodian of 37 acres of rural farmland in Suffolk, previously farmed with a similar philosophy by my grandparents. For the past decade, I've been working towards the goal of turning the entire plot into a rewilding project, where livestock roams free, wildlife thrives and nature finds its balance. This has worked, with birds of prey moving in, turtle doves and nightingales breeding, deer roaming the landscape and the landscape finding harmony. HOWEVER, to truly become a rewilded site, I need to be able to release the pigs, goats, donkeys and other livestock from their pens to disrupt and change the landscape as they would have done without human interference. I've already begun the process with over £3,000 worth of fencing installed, but I need help to complete the rest.
Stock fencing the entire site costs thousands of pounds, and though I've begun this project, the working farm doesn't earn enough excess to move this exciting development forwards. Boundary fencing the entire site will allow the pigs to range. They will create wallows, swim in the ponds, rootle and disrupt the soil, unearthing undiscovered seed beds for wildflowers. Goats and donkeys will eat through hedgerows, knock back blackthorn, and create a balance where ALL plants can survive. And, eventually, cattle will tear up the grass and fertilise the soil as they go. Low stock fencing will keep my beasts in, but allow deer to roam too, ever increasing the biodiversity of the site.
And more importantly, perimeter fencing and cattle grids will allow YOU to come and visit! I'd love you to come whether you donate or not.
To be a truly community-based rewilding project, I want to allow access for walking, for naturalists, for those who want to just come and be in nature. The long-term dream is to have a number of walking routes, bird hides, badger hides and a community hub so we can all watch nature restore itself and become part of it without dire consequences modern farming has on the landscape.
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
DONATE - even just £5. This might seem a small sum, but it goes towards making something so much better that benefits nature, us and the planet.
SHARE - please share the fundraiser. The more who see it, the more people I hope will learn of the site and be able to visit one day!
BUY - purchase some wool, or nesting material for your garden birds. Come and enjoy the campsite for a couple of days. Or sign up to the REKO scheme and enjoy fresh, sustainable, locally grown produce from my market garden.
THANK YOU
Thank you so much for taking the time to read and consider helping. We only have one planet and must look after it. Creating a patchwork of rewilding projects across the country will safeguard our landscape and give places for nature to thrive - including ourselves.
