Meet Axel Biggie Smalls, the internet sensation and inspiration behind The Big House Cat Sanctuary. As many of you know, Axel’s journey from obesity to health has captured hearts and sparked meaningful conversations about caring for overweight cats. This has turned into a Call to Action for his family and their online community to help better support these cats.
The sanctuary will be run by his me, Kristine, Biggie's proud mom. I’m a veteran, a mother, and a long time animal advocate with extensive experience in Animal Rescue and Nonprofit work, having served as a Director, Volunteer, and Foster for almost a decade in my local community.
Biggie is also ready to take on a new role as the ambassador of this one-of-a-kind sanctuary —dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating extremely obese cats like him across North America.
Our Mission:
We are transforming a 700-square-foot attached garage into a sanctuary space specifically designed for extremely obese cats at risk of euthanasia. These cats face unique challenges that shelters and many homes cannot accommodate. This sanctuary will provide:
A safe, stress-free environment for rehabilitation.
Customized care plans from a world-class veterinary and animal rehabilitation team.
Education, webinars, and support for shelters and rescues handling similar cases.
Education, webinars, and support for pet owners wanting to make changes for their cats.
Why This Matters:
Currently, there is no other sanctuary or rehab program in North America solely dedicated to cats battling extreme obesity. We aim to change that. The Big House Sanctuary will not only rescue, rehab, and if able, rehome these exceptionally large cats. We will also shine a light on the resources, care, and support needed to manage feline obesity. Our goal is to inspire pet owners to take proactive steps toward healthier lives for their cats and support those rescues & shelters who have them in their care.
How Funds Will Be Used:
Every dollar raised will go directly toward remodeling the garage into a cozy, cat-friendly sanctuary with proper:
Insulation, heating, airflow, and filtration.
Lighting to simulate natural environments, including replacing the garage doors with ones that have windows.
Safe play and enrichment areas tailored for extremely obese cats.
We’ll also install equipment to stream our content, providing real-time inspiration and education for pet owners worldwide.
Transparency is key: We will share financial details of the renovation, and any excess funds will go directly to the sanctuary cats. Once the Sanctuary is officially open, it will run as a Registered Non-Profit Organization here in Canada. We will also welcome extremely obese cats from not only Canada but the USA as well if they can safely travel.
Your Support Means Everything:
We understand these are tough times, and not everyone is in a position to give. If you can’t donate, cheering us on and spreading the word about The Big House Sanctuary means the world to us. For those who do wish to contribute, know that your support will help save lives and pave the way for a brighter future for these amazing cats.
Let’s make this dream a reality and officially open our sanctuary this fall! Together, we can rewrite the story for extremely overweight cats everywhere.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
The Big House Cat Sanctuary Team
