Build a Safe Kitchen for Nalinaibi School

Donation protected

This August (August 1–16, 2025), three families—the Sanfords, the Leyvas, and the Brook family—will travel together to Namazala, a village about 30 minutes outside the city of Jinja, Uganda, to build a much-needed covered fire kitchen for Nalinaibi Primary School.

This project is deeply personal.

Chris Sanford lived in Uganda for over a year in 2012 while serving in the Navy Reserve and was able to form lasting bonds—including with Sam Skitimbo, his driver and now lifelong friend. Sam’s family lives in Namazala, and through him, we were introduced to Nalinaibi Primary School—a vital hub of education, nutrition, and hope for over 600 children.

Our support for Nalinaibi began in 2012, when we partnered with friends and family back home to fund over 100 desks, built by local carpenters. In 2023, Chris returned with more desks and school supplies, continuing the investment in a school that’s doing so much with so little. Now, we’re turning our attention to a basic but urgent need: a safe, covered cooking area.

Why a covered fire kitchen? Currently, school meals—often the only meal of the day for many students—are prepared outdoors, with no protection from sun, wind, or rain. A covered fire kitchen will allow meals to be prepared safely, efficiently, and year-round.

How are we building this? All materials will be sourced locally to support businesses in the Jinja area. The kitchen will be constructed using simple tools, brick and mortar walls, and a slanted roof design that promotes airflow and durability. Our layout ensures safe cooking and storage space, while remaining open on one side for ventilation.

Where will your donation go? We will be using these funds to locally source building materials (brick, timber, roofing), cooking supplies, and paint and cleaning materials. Any additional funds will go toward more seating for students, musical instruments, and other teacher-requested supplies.

We are three families—the Sanfords, the Leyvas, and the Brooks—including 6 adults and 4 children, committed to hands-on service, long-term friendship, and community partnership. We will build the kitchen ourselves, alongside local neighbors, ensuring every donation makes a direct impact.

Your support—whether financial or simply sharing this story—means the world to us.

Let’s give the children of Namazala a safer, healthier, and more dignified place to prepare meals.

Thank you.
