Why I Am Launching This Campaign

My name is Gregory Guerrero. As patriarch, husband, father and carer of the Guerrero family for almost thirty years, I see my family's daily struggles firsthand. We are a family of true, extreme survivors, but right now, we are fighting a life-or-death battle for our future. Between the four of us—Myself, Jodie, Julia, and Anna—we manage over 70+ severe medical illnesses/disabilities and rising. We urgently need a specialized, medically safe disability home with an isolation unit to survive. We cannot build it alone, which is why I am stepping in to ask for your help.

Jodie's Miracle Journey & The Danger We Face

In 2006, at just 35 years old, Jodie (my wife) experienced the kind of a drastic emergency that we all fear. At the time, she was also a mother to two beautiful babies and enjoyed a treasured career at Boeing, Australia. Prior to working in aerospace, she worked for QANTAS - The Americas, in San Francisco International Airport.

Tragically, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma after an 11-month struggle against medical misogyny and medical negligence, where 7 x different doctors dismissed her symptoms as "hypochondria". It was confirmed that Jodie was very close to death when her initial disease was discovered.

Against all odds, Jodie survived when her prognosis could have gone either way. Today, she is a miracle—a triple cancer survivor and a bone marrow transplant survivor. Her incredible resilience inspired her to become a renowned 'consumer health advocate', sharing her story globally and advocating for more diagnostic safety. Her journey even deeply moved Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on her last trip to Australia and former Governor-General Dame Quentin Bryce to read her story and write her several letters.

While Jodie's blood cancers were cured by her transplant, due to an anonymous American bone marrow donor, her treatments have left her body incredibly frail. She is profoundly immunosuppressed and balances 40+ complex illnesses daily, by taking 26+ meds every day and subcutaneous injected human plasma weekly, just to keep her alive. For Jodie, catching a common cold from the community, results in a life-threatening month-long hospital stay, depending on how severe her infection becomes.

The threat is multiplying for my beautiful family. Our daughter, Julia, battles severe Crohn’s Disease and will soon face immunosuppression herself. Both of our daughters are neurodiverse (Autism x 2, ADHD & Intellectual Disability) and live with 11 to 15 complex medical issues each, requiring constant, lifelong care.

The Solution: A Medically Safe Home with an Isolation Unit

To keep Jodie and Julia alive for as long as possible, my family must build a home equipped with a dedicated isolation unit. As you can see (from the plans below) on the bottom level of our first (double-storey) architectural plans, this unit features a private, isolated space under the house. It will serve as a physical shield, allowing our family members to quarantine safely when viruses enter the household, preventing life-threatening infections.

Likewise, as you can see on the back area of our second (one storey) architectural plans, this unit features a private, isolated space on the back of our future home. It too; can serve also as a physical shield, allowing our family members to quarantine safely when sickness enters the household, preventing life-threatening infections or death. The plans also include a 'Future Lift' cavity. Jodie’s tumour scarring caused a permanent 'Spinal Cord Injury' and (over time) muscle atrophy in her right leg, plus a condition called 'Drop Foot', requiring an Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO) brace and heavy opioid daily pain management. As the family's physical mobility declines over time, this lift cavity ensures the home will remain fully wheelchair accessible, so they are never trapped. Below is a video of Jodie having an AFO molded and fitted to her leg. Jodie must wear this brace outside, at all times to prevent falls and also uses a wheelchair for longer distances.

How This Build is Being Funded (And Why We Need Your Help)

This specialized medical home is a massive undertaking. The Guerreros have poured absolutely everything they have into making a medically safer home, a reality, and their life savings are now completely tapped out.

• Our Savings Are Gone: Our family has completely emptied our bank accounts to secure a deposit and purchase our piece of land in Cranley, Toowoomba. We have zero financial reserves left.

• The Land is a Medical Strategy, not a Luxury: We deliberately chose this escarpment block because it was affordable, but most importantly, it sits right down the road from the new Toowoomba Hospital—giving Jodie and Julia immediate access to the best in emergency care.

Owning this land, gives us the closest vacant buildable land, smack bang next to the new Darling Downs Regional Super-Hospital. Our area's new hospital is the largest-ever regional healthcare infrastructure investment in Queensland's history. This $1.3+ billion world-class health and knowledge precinct is moving the region out of the shadow of major capital cities. It ensures families (like us) across the Darling Downs no longer have to travel long distances to Brisbane for life-saving specialist care.

• The NDIS Gap: While three of my family are NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) participants and we anticipate roughly $80,000AUD to $100,000AUD in government support for specialized interior modifications (like the lift fitting), the NDIS strictly prohibits funding the actual structure of a house. We own the land, and our savings are gone. We are completely maxed out, which is why we are turning to the community to help us build the physical walls.

Our Building Milestones & Financial Breakdown

A custom 1-storey medical home costs $650,000AUD. A 2-storey medical home costs $850,000AUD. By combining our personal land/deposit value with anticipated NDIS funds, we have set our fundraising targets to bridge the exact structural gap:

• Note: If we are blessed enough to raise anything beyond the building costs, every single cent will be placed into a protective trust to fund lifelong care, medical supplies, and physical assistance for Julia and Anna to protect them if or when we (their parents) pass away.
