UPDATE!!!
Buddy is now one week post-op and is making a remarkable recovery! He is getting his wiggle back and seems overjoyed to be feeling good again. Despite the discomfort he is in after such a major surgery, it is far less than the pain he has been living with for many years. Let me tell you, this is one tough little dog! Of course, Buddy's excitement must be managed in order to keep him as quiet as possible while he recovers. He remains on a combination of medicine to help him with his pain. Once again, we want to thank the wonderful folks at Burlington Emergency & Veterinary Services (BEVS) for treating Buddy, and following up daily for progress updates.
Some have wondered why we continue to keep this site going now that Buddy has received the life-saving surgery that he needed. First of all - it is to update you on Buddy's journey. We know that those who have given to Buddy's cause are interested in seeing Buddy through this journey of healing and eventually finding a forever home. Secondly - we know that those who have so generously given to helping Buddy know that the problem does not end here, and believe in helping all abandoned, or stray animals in need, like Buddy.
North Country Animal League is a non-profit organization that takes in and cares for many hundreds of homeless dogs and cats each year. We are so grateful to receive any support we can get for our animals, and are deeply touched that Buddy's story has not only allowed us to raise funds to save his life, but has greatly affected the lives of so many other homeless animals in our care. Thank you for following. Buddy has taught us all that every Buddy deserves a chance!

Buddy's Story
Meet Buddy. Buddy is a small dog with a giant-sized heart. Being the young Jack Russell Terrier that he is, Buddy dreams of burying bones, chasing his tail, running after squirrels, palling around with kids, and jumping on laps. Unfortunately, all of these things are not a reality for him. It seems that Buddy has lived the majority of his life in chronic pain.
Buddy doesn't have a voice to share his story, so we know little of his life before. Buddy was abandoned at the door of North Country Animal League (NCAL) three weeks ago, in so much pain he could barely walk. One of our staff members found him alone, curled up in the corner confused, scared, and in intense pain - so much that it made his body tremble and muscles seize. We knew that we needed to do everything we could to help him.
Buddy, we learned, suffers from Intervertebral Disc Disease, the degeneration of one or more spinal disks causing pain and neurological problems. If left untreated, this disease, in severe cases such as Buddy's, can lead to permanent paralysis.
Buddy has received three weeks of drug therapy, which has had little-to-no effect due to the severity of his injury.
The only solution for Buddy at this point is an immediate high-cost surgery that will decompress the spinal cord at the site of his injury and herniation of his disk material.
With this surgery, Buddy would be expected to make a full recovery within 3 to 6 weeks, allowing him to realize the pain-free life that he so deserves. He will go on to set an example and teach others about bravery and perseverance against the odds.
NCAL is a 501(c)(3) limited-access shelter located in Morrisville, Vermont, that relies on donations to provide the best care for our orphaned animals in need, like Buddy. We need your help! Please consider a donation to Buddy's Surgery Fund today, and we will be sure to update you on his journey through (hopeful) surgery, recovery, and his happy ending (or in this case, his fresh start on life!)
