My Dad has been nothing short of THE prime example of a hard working American. He's always been loyal and absolutely dedicated to his work, no matter who it was for, or how important the job was, he always gave every ounce he had.
My dad was diagnosed with liver cancer a few months ago and he decided to retire just weeks before we knew about it. Needless to say, since he retired, he ceased to have health insurance. (What a coincidence).
In the midst of all of this, I myself am just learning about how a lot of these things function. One of the most troubling is that if my Dad were just ONE year older, he would have access to Medicare. Since he is too young, he was denied any outside financial help. (Being married to a teacher and me being a starving musician, there's not much hope for cash anytime soon.) My brother, Hal, has been taking on a lot of financial burden, and I just wanted to publicly thank you for that bro.
After the diagnosis it seemed as though nobody from any doctor's office or health clinic cared about my father anymore. He was at home for weeks, slowly and surely starting to deteriorate and my mother couldn't even get a return phone call for any financial help.
The latest news is that his cancer has spread up his spine, on the verge of entering his brain, which we are already pretty sure has. This is when the doctors told us that hospice was the next choice. No one was recommending treatment. I'm trying my best to not sound bitter or get political at all, but it seems as though it is a normal practice in this country, that if you don't have health insurance, you get sent home to die. Being in the situation we're in at the moment, we have nowhere else to turn besides help from family and friends.
All we want, at this point, is for my father to live out the small remainder of his life in comfort, which could be as early as this weekend. We can't afford treatment and it's far too late too even try. Hospice is one of the seemingly saving graces of health care, as they are providing their services for free. (It seems like someone finally cares). We are SO thankful for their help.
Please donate here if you can to help my Father live out his remaining time, and help my mother and the rest of the family with the financial burden.
