Celebration of Life & Support for Saundra’s Family

As some of you may know, my mom Saundra Keister, was diagnosed with stage 4 triple negative breast cancer last year on June 12th 2020. Since her diagnoses, she underwent  many chemo treatments, radiation, a mastectomy, weight loss, hair loss, severe neuropathy, along with other symptoms and side affects. Her cancer started as a lump in her left armpit and her left breast. Fortunately her chemo treatments, radiation & her mastectomy completely killed the cancer in her left breast. However, since her mastectomy in February of 2021, her cancer metastasized to her sacrum, iliac, right femur, left femur, spine, ribs, liver & lungs. She was still fighting strong until she fell and broke two toes on December 10th 2021, I believe that is what started her decline. She became bedridden for the majority of her days because her foot was in so much pain. From then on she spent at least one day a week in the hospital. She spent half of Christmas Day in the hospital but I’m so glad she was able to spend Christmas morning with us and made it home in time for dinner. She started to lose her ability to swallow which meant she wasn’t getting enough nutrition and became very very weak. She wasn’t able to eat alone in fear she would choke. I started to have to sleep with her at night in case she needed something to drink or needed help to her bathroom. I had to leave my job to provide her with full time care. On January 10th my mom woke up with severe slurred speech, a droopy left eye and was not able to take her medication. She was almost like she was having a stroke however she passed all of the stroke tests. I still called 911 and her taken to the hospital where they ran many tests. In the end we had to face the hard truth, there was no other cause for her symptoms, the cancer had just taken over her body. There were moments I didn’t think she was going to make it home at all, but you all know my mom.... she was a fighter and stubborn as all hell. She came home on hospice on Monday January 17th. From the moment she came home she was never alone. Not even for a second. She had so many loved ones by her side. She had moments of alertness and was able to acknowledge each person that came to see her. She held on to make sure she was able to say goodbye to as many people as she could. Wednesday night (January 19th, 2022), as I was cuddled in her bed with her, as my cousin Suz & her son Dylan & as our dear friend Wendy all sat in her room with her my mom took her last breath at 10:34pm. The whole family gathered around her to say our final goodbyes. As hard as it is, I am so glad she is no longer in pain. We all will miss her dearly. Rest In Peace Mommy.
