"An ambitious new ocean race, the Molokai'i of the north"

The Bucca Kri is a Grade 4 Ocean Race, 55km deep water race, downwind point to point from St Ives to Trevose Head. This unique and elite event is one of the most ambitious, exposed and advanced courses in Europe.

Rooted in Cornish folklore and the legend of the sea spirit's cry before the storm, the Bucca Kri is designed to challenge most experienced ocean paddlers. In this first year the concept will be tested by just 40 craft, invited to race in surfski singles, doubles and V6 outrigger canoes.

The vision

2 of the UKs most experienced paddlers, Glenn Eldrige and Jim Taylor-Ross ventured to Hawaii on a whim, more than 25 years ago. Borrowing a boat, sleeping on floors, and guessing the route, they raced in the Moloka’i. On the plane home they crafted the Bucca Kri and have been planning it ever since.

Glenn and Jim have both worked hard to develop ocean racing in the UK. With over 50 ocean events successfully delivered between them, the time has come to finally launch the legend.

On behalf of the GB Ocean Racing Committee this is a not for profit venture that belongs to the Ocean Racing paddle community, organised by the Ocean Sports Centre and Ocean Surfski.

The Bucca Kri is the ultimate, 9th event of the GB Ocean Racing series, under the governance of Paddle UK, purposely planned between the European and World Ocean Championships.

What you can do

The 55km deep water, point to point course is beyond the reach of our normal ocean racing safety crews. The professional safety operation required will cost £11,000. That's £200 per kilometer.

This year we need your help to launch the legend and prove the concept, so next year we can go to international sponsorship and increase the number of competitors.
