My name is Alex. I want to help a man that helps everyone. His name is Bubba.
A few years back, I fulfilled a dream of opening a restaurant on the beach in Anguilla, Caribbean. A quiet, unassuming man called Bubba walked down the beach in Sandy Ground one day and simply started to help us rebuild a beach shack from scratch. He didn't say much; he just went to work. This is what Bubba does. He sees someone needing help and he just steps in, and he won't stop until it's done. A man of very few words, stoic, unassuming, gentle, and so incredibly generous.
If you've been to Anguilla, you should know that Sylvester Hanley (mostly known as Bubba) pretty much helped build every major beach bar in Anguilla - Sandy Island, Johnno's, Elvis, Dad's, Lit Lounge, Prickly Pear, Tasty's POV, and probably more. And also boats, benches, and homes. Some call Bubba the governor of Sandy Ground because he has touched so many lives, contributed to so many businesses, and Anguilla's culture overall.
I'm here today because I want to help a man that helps everyone. Bubba now not even 50 years old, has been diagnosed with metastasis spreading cancer from lungs to brain. After a week in Anguilla hospital, he was airlifted to Trinidad where he's undergoing surgery and radiation. Due to Bubba's otherwise excellent health, the doctors and we have hope for recovery.
Most people in Anguilla don't have health insurance. This means every hour in the hospital, every medicine, every test, every treatment, every medical transport has to be paid for by Bubba and his loved ones. Just the medical transport from Anguilla to Trinidad was $19,000... I'm no doctor but my guess is to bring Bubba home healthy (and we will) the medical bill could be well above $100,000.
I'm asking all of us who love Anguilla to step in and help Bubba who played such a major part in making Anguilla so special. I know we can't help everyone. But if we were to help just one good person - that has helped so many others - Bubba is the one.
Every bit helps. We will not stop until Bubba is back.
