My name is Lauren Abdul. I am a junior at Lawrence University.
However, this gofundme is not about me; it's about my best friend, and partner, Cael Neary.
Cael is transgender and has bee in school with me for the past three years. He studies Studio Art, and is very talented. He works three campus jobs amongst other ways of making money to pay his way through school. In the time I have known him, we have become very close and been through a lot. After a fallout with his family, he moved in with my family, who have taken him in as one of their own.
Now that he has been on hormones for quite some time and has begun to reconnect with his family a bit, the next hurdle is getting him comfortable in the body he is in. This includes being able to get top surgery.
Cael has been very strong for his own sake and others, including myself, however, I know this is something that weights on his constantly. The surgery itself, let alone the copay is very expensive. This will at least help to get him on the ground running and to prevent all pain he is experiencing, along with assisting in all struggles he has been facing throughout his transition.
It is hard to be sure of yourself and have to try and prove who you are to the world consistently. Cael has the purest heart I have ever known and does not want to ask his parents for help or their insurance to keep connected with them and to strengthen that tie. Hopefully we can do what we can here so he can live a long, happy, healthy, self-assured life.
