BSA Eagle Scout -Rancho Santa Marta

Hello, my name is Jacob Mucher. I am a Boy Scout with Troop 384 in Santee, CA. I have been involved in scouting for about 8 years and I currently hold the rank of Life Scout (one rank below Eagle). Scouting has taught me a great deal of practical knowledge about everything from knot-tying to first-aid and pioneering to safe rifle shooting. More importantly, Scouts has taught me many valuable lessons in service, community and leadership.
Currently, I am on the road to obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout and the traits I mentioned above will be further developed and tested. In order to achieve the rank of Eagle one must complete the Eagle Scout Service Project. As such, one must plan and execute a project which benefits the community while demonstrating leadership and service to others.
Around the time I was investigating potential Eagle projects, I discovered Rancho Santa Marta during a church mission’s trip in Baja California. Rancho Santa Marta is a 450-acre ranch property near San Vicente B.C. (130 miles south of San Diego). The Ranch is home for about 50 homeless, orphaned or abused children. It also serves as a school for about 250 children in kindergarten through junior-high. But starting this fall, the ranch will also teach high-school! The Ranch is run by Rod & Tina Struiksma who live at the ranch where they’ve raised their five children. They have dedicated their lives to taking care of the special needs of the children living at the ranch and the success of the exceptional school.
When I visited the Ranch, I expressed my interest to Rod about benefiting these kids with my Eagle project and asked him what was his biggest immediate need. Rod responded with “Whiteboards!” He explained to me that the ranch has always had elementary and junior high school rooms, but was in the process of the construction of four new high school rooms (…which I was helping stack bricks for at the time). Each of the four classrooms need two 4' x 8' whiteboards, totaling to eight whiteboards. The boards are quite expensive and Rod asked if I thought I could outfit two classrooms. I told him I could do two; but my real goal is to outfit all four classrooms! These are top-quality whiteboards (ceramic-magnetic, commercial type boards), that will last for many years and will help with the education of hundreds of children. I will manage fundraising, procurement, team recruitment, transportation, lodging, and on-site installation. I am asking for your help with fundraising. The total estimated cost for the project is $4,750.
I know that I have an ambitious monetary goal but I’m confident I will find a way to achieve it. I would very much appreciate any contribution you can make. If I’m fortunate enough to raise funds beyond my goal amount, any excess money will be given to Rancho Santa Marta and be well utilized for their many needs.
Thank you very much,
Jacob Mucher
