Our sweet Brynn has been diagnosed with kidney cancer.
For those who don’t know her, Brynn is a bright, beautiful 8-year-old who just began 3rd grade. She adores her family and friends, shares an inseparable bond with her mom, Kristy, and has her dad, Zach, completely wrapped around her finger. Her brothers, Brandt and Brady, have always been her biggest protectors and cheerleaders. Beyond that, Brynn shines as a talented dancer at Just Dance, a fierce competitor on the softball field, and a baller on the basketball court.
What began as a normal weekend quickly turned into every parent’s nightmare. On Sunday, September 7th, Brynn was rushed by ambulance to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids after doctors discovered a concerningly enlarged kidney. Further testing revealed a large cancerous mass that had overtaken most of her right kidney. By Wednesday, surgeons had to remove the kidney along with the tumor—larger than a softball.
Brynn now faces a journey of continued treatments while also learning to live with one kidney. With chemotherapy and frequent trips back and forth to DeVos ahead, her treatment plan is still uncertain—doctors estimate anywhere from four months to over a year. Through it all, “Brynny Boo” has shown incredible courage and toughness, but this has been an overwhelming experience for the entire family.
Kristy has had to step away from work for an extended period to care for Brynn as she undergoes treatment, which could last anywhere from four months to over a year. While FMLA helps protect her job, it does not provide income, leaving the family without that vital support. The financial strain is already significant and will only continue as Brynn’s journey unfolds. Between the ambulance ride, surgery, countless tests, and ongoing treatments in Grand Rapids, the burden is far greater than any family should have to carry on their own.
This GoFundMe has been created to help ease that burden and allow the Burdos to focus on what matters most—Brynn’s healing.
The Burdo family is the kind of family everyone is grateful to know—kind, generous, and always showing up to bring joy to others, even in hard times. Let’s come together as a community to lift up the Burdo family and show them the same love and strength they have always shared with others.
