At the age of 33, with his whole life ahead of him, Kevin was diagnosed with cancer. This is a young man who has spent his life working hard and serving others, including time as a firefighter in the United States Air Force. Anyone who knows him will tell you he is easily one of the best people they have ever met. He is the type of man that who would lay his life down for someone and is strongly, morally driven by his love for God, family and country.
In September 2017, Kevin met Anna, age 30, through their church. Just one year later in September 2018, he asked her to marry him. Their first year together was filled with joy and laughter, fun and excitement. It was a very accelerated relationship, as many will say is the case when you “know” you have found your special someone. But just as intensely and quickly as their love blossomed, so did the challenges they would soon face.
In October 2018, Kevin began to experience vague but concerning symptoms which quickly lead to a cascade of doctor’s appointments. It required a bit of assertiveness on their parts to push the doctors to look beyond the “easy” answer and take Kevin’s case seriously. By doing so, it led to Kevin having blood work drawn to check for cancer markers. Just 3 days after, in early November, he woke up to a phone call saying his markers were very concerning for malignant cancer, and that same evening, the couple found themselves in the hospital where Anna works as a nurse, and Kevin was being operated on.
The following few weeks were a whirlwind of doctors appointments, testing, lab draws, and of course, emotion and stress. Eventually, tests would confirm cancer and also show that it had metastasized(spread) to Kevin’s lymph nodes as well. A couple more weeks of frequent doctors visits and testing would follow and lead up to Kevin starting chemotherapy in mid-December... less than 2 months from his initial doctors visit. When the word “cancer” was first presented, Kevin and Anna had not even yet been dating a full year, had only been engaged 2months, and were starting to plan their wedding and future together. Very quickly their world changed from wedding planning and honeymoon details to scheduling doctors appointments and chemotherapy. Thankfully the doctors do give Kevin a “very good long-term prognosis,” however, it is not without potentially extreme and long term consequences. One of the many challenges this young couple faces is the possibility of chemotherapy affecting the ability to conceive children naturally. Therefore, they are being told to plan for that possibility, which would include IVF ( in vitro fertilization) which requires a whole new set of doctors and potential future medical costs. The IVF alone can cost a minimum of $20,000 per attempt. This does not include all the other steps and costs associated with such.
More complications include both Kevin and Anna taking pay cuts due to being out of work for a few months during this process; having to change/cancel their wedding/honeymoon; and the obvious medical costs leading up to and following Kevin’s cancer diagnosis. They credit God daily for his priovision during this time, including the practical things like having insurance coverage. But there is much that insurance may not cover and there is even more left to the unknown, that only time will yield answers to.
Needles to say, this has been a very difficult time for this young couple as they fight not only for Kevin’s life, health and future, but for the life, health and future of their relationship as well. They face decisions daily which have consequences both short and long term, both superficial and serious in nature.
Many of you have already reached out to this couple and offered help in any way possible. They humbly allow this page to be created on their behalf as a method for that to take place. Neither of them ask for anyone to give, and especially not to give beyond their means or if they do not feel lead to do so. One way or another, we know and believe that all will work out well for Kevin and Anna. This is simply a way to help bless them. No words could ever express the gratitude that is felt when rally together to help during a time like this; but please know Kevin and Anna thank you and appreciate you all wholeheartedly. That goes for any and all of you who have offered support of any kind, especially through your love and prayers. They continue to be blessed by and thankful for you all daily!
