Bryce is my oldest brother. He has been married to my sister-in-law, Brandy, for 16 years and they are the parents to 3 kids. Over the course of their marriage Bryce has watched, supported and advocated for Brandy as she has suffered from extreme depression and other mental illnesses. The tables have turned and it has become his family’s turn to support him through the healing and recovery Bryce now needs.
About 2 years ago Bryce noticed some swelling in his legs that was becoming painful. From day forward, every time we saw Bryce he had a new symptom. Swelling in his legs spread to him not being able to open his eyes well in the morning due to swelling in his face. Loss of some of his muscle mass became weight loss so drastic that he now needs to layer himself in heavy clothes, blankets and use a space heater just to keep warm. Not being able to lift weights or go out fishing became Bryce struggling to make it up a flight of stairs or pull himself into his truck to get to work every morning.
Naturally when his health started declining, he saw a doctor. Over the past two years doctor after doctor has been stumped. He’s young! He has a ‘healthy’ diet! Every possible test was done; blood tests, ultrasounds, bone marrow and liver biopsies, colonoscopy, endoscopy, CT scans and any many others. Blood and organ disorders were eliminated. X-rays and MRIs came back clear or inconclusive. Finally, after 2 years of tests the doctor told Bryce, “We have gone down and checked every avenue for what may be causing your health problems…except for your diet.” Late last year Bryce was laid off from his job, and due to his health and the COVID-19 pandemic he has been unable to look for new employment.
Orthorexia Nervosa- When ‘healthy’ eating becomes dangerous: Over the years we have watched as Bryce has taken his already very healthy diet and restricted it further and further. One by one foods with fat, sugar or not lean enough were eliminated from the list of things Bryce permitted in his diet. Eventually entire food groups were deemed unacceptable. On and on this cycle has gone and now here we are.
He has extremely low body weight (6 feet tall and down to 120 pounds,) his thyroid is non-functioning, no testosterone, blood clots throughout his body, an extremely low heart rate Bryce is in need of URGENT medical care He needs inpatient care. Brandy is currently working with a treatment facility in Colorado- there is not a treatment facility in Utah for men who need inpatient care for eating disorders. She needs $4,000 down to get him admitted. Beyond that she will have continued bills to pay as Bryce starts down the long (and expensive!) road to recovery from an eating disorder.
I have set this page up as there have been so many who have asked, “What can I do?” or “How can I help?” Any amount will help ease the financial burden in getting Bryce the treatment he needs. Even if you cannot donate financially, your prayers for Bryce and his family would be genuinely and sincerely appreciated.
