Bryan Takes on MCAS

BRYAN TAKES ON MCAS

In Spring of 2016, after seeking medical insight for many worrying symptoms, Bryan was diagnosed with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). The family of disorders to which it belongs (Mast Cell Activation Disorders) are characterized by dysfunction of the mast cells.

Bryan's symptoms easily fill a standard page, and at any given moment, he is experiencing at least 80% of the symptoms. At times, he is experiencing them all. He is only 33 years old, and able to function a few hours a day at most. The worst most people have ever felt, Bryan feels all the time. A fellow MCAD patient who has undergone chemotherapy compares the daily symptoms of MCADs to aggressive chemotherapy treatment. The pain, nausea, fatigue, numbness, and dozens of other symptoms affect him 24/7. This impacts his ability to work, care for himself, play with his son, and much more. He has had to give up most of the activities he once enjoyed because his physical limitations have become too great.

Having consulted with immunologists and neurologists, along with an otolaryngologist, cardiologist, endocrinologist, internal medicine physician, physiologist, rheumatologist, pulmonologist, and family practice physician, Bryan and his wife Whitney identified two of the foremost mast cell specialists in the United States, Dr. Lawrence Afrin, MD, and Dr. Tania Dempsey, MD, who recently joined forces in their practice. With a normal wait list of 18-24 months, Whitney contacted Dr. Dempsey to discuss Bryan's case and was approved for their cancellation list. Bryan now has an appointment in early December for a consultation with Dr. Dempsey. The clinic does not accept insurance of any kind, and the initial consultation with Dr. Dempsey is $2,000. The clinic is located in New York. Testing will occur over the course of three days. Whitney will accompany Bryan as his symptoms can dramatically impact his ability to function normally.

A followup visit will be required in January, which likewise comes with a $2,000 cost, and will require 1-2 weeks' stay in the vicinity for treatments offered by the clinic.

Funds will be used toward the clinic fees, travel, accommodation, transportation, testing, and treatment for Bryan. Thank you for your love and support. Prayers and love are warmly welcomed as the family anxiously awaits testing, results, and hopefully treatment.
