BRUTAL ATTACK ON MY DOWN'S SYNDROME BROTHER
Carlos is 51 with Down's Syndrome. Both our parents are deceased. He weighs 96 pounds and stands 4 foot 11 inches. On April 25th Carlos was brutally beaten by the person who was hired to take care of him at his group home; by the company I trusted had his best interest. The police are currently investigating this. Carlos has had to have surgery and can not walk. His spine was fractured at T12, T11 and L2 requiring rods and screws to be placed in his spine and a bone graft. Several ribs were broken and he had trauma to his face that the facility nurse called an abcess. I was never notified. Carlos spent an entire week like this before physical therapist from outside the facility are to see him and realized something wasn't right. He was then taken to the emergency room. It was not until this time I was contacted. He also has traumatic brain injury. He had a stroke where he was hit in the head that affects being able to track with his eyes. The attack was caught on video and this is in the hands of the police. A warrant was issued for the caregivers arrest Derrick Bass but he has yet to turn himself in. Carlos needs to go to a skilled facility for rehabilitation but given he had Downs Syndrome is low verbal meaning his communication is limited to short phrases. I feel he will best recover at home with family. This will require a day and night medically trained assistant to assist him as he can not be left unsupervised. He had to be restrained at the hospital because he doesn't understand he can not get up to walk. He has to learn tonwalk again. which was more He does not understand why he can't walk, he asks me his sister for "new legs". This fundrIser will help cover what his insurance does not. Round the clock care for the next month's that he heals and recovers. I am a teacher so I am off for the summer. Our parents are gone and there is no one else but me to help him. I have 2 kids still at home one in college and 2 who are married with small children. My college student has returned to help his uncle and my kids at home help as much as they can but he requires assistance in being lifted to wheelchair, bathing and he is unable to feed himself without help at this time. He is relearning basic skills. Before the attack Carlos could move around and use the restroom by his self. These funds will help cover the cost of a vetted caregiver around the clock once school starts back with approximately 5 months of almost around the clock care while he rehabilites. The caregiver he had was also witholding food so Carlos went from 120 pounds to 94 pounds. He has already rapidly started gaining weight and is uo to 101 pounds at this time and gaining.
Please have this go viral to help Carlos stay home to recover where he will be and feel the safest.
