Karen Short and her daughter Amber from Derry, Pennsylvania were home sleeping at 2 a.m. on August 23rd when an intruder broke into their home and brutally attacked them. (see video link below)
Karen sustained various life-threatening injuries that required her to be air lifted to a Cambria County hospital. Since being admitted to the hospital Karen has undergone many surgeries to repair the extensive damage. She is still unable to speak or eat on her own. It will be some time before Karen is released from the hospital and she will go to a rehabilitation center before being able to come home. Some days are better than others, but she is a long way from recovery both physically and mentally.
Amber was also injured quite severely during the attack. She was admitted to the same hospital as Karen but has since been released. Each week she is now seeing a trauma therapist as she cannot get the images of the attack out of her head. Currently she is staying with her aunts where she is safe and comfortable, waiting until her mother can come home.
The family of Karen and Amber are hoping to raise funds to help support the ongoing costs of this horrific event. The apartment they were living in had to go through an extensive Bio hazard cleanup. (Neither the homeowners insurance or victims services were able to pay for the extensive cleanup) During the cleanup all their living room furniture had to be disposed of as well as shoes, clothes and many other various items that were in the rooms where the attacks were carried out. The funds will also go towards replacing damanged items, moving/relocation expenses, bio hazard clean up as well as all after care costs or medical expenses.
It is the family’s goal to have a new home setup for Karen when she comes home and to relieve her of any financial hardship this has caused.
We personally want to thank anyone who can donate a few dollars towards this much needed cause. Thank you.
